It's extremely important that your dog or puppy has a good and positive association with its name. Therefore when starting your training, give him a treat and praise whenever he responds correctly to his name. For example; you are teaching a basic command like sit; call the dogs name and then the command; "Rover" sit! This way the dog learns its name, as well as it's first command and has been rewarded for a correct response. With a new dog or puppy you may have to gently push its hind end down and hold its front end up by the collar thus guiding him, when first giving and learning the command sit. You must always use the dogs name before giving him any command and then treat and praise when he responds correctly.
Never, repeat never, call out the dogs name and punish him or yell at him. He will learn to avoid you whenever you use his name, which is exactly the opposite of what you want.

Easy Dog Training Using Positive Reinforcement by Greg Marlett
Using positive reinforcement is viewed as the quickest and most humane method of working with your dog. This behavior approach works faster and more effectively with your dog, while also building a bond of trust and effective communication between the dog and owner. The positive reinforcement method is now endorsed and used by the overwhelming majority of dog trainers and professionals.
Positive reinforcement is really a simple technique, it's merely rewarding the dog for what he does right, or correctly. In other words when the dog obeys a command correctly, he is rewarded with a treat and/or praise!
These dog behavior techniques are much easier and more humane than using punishment, or pain, to try and force a desired behavior, such as was often the case in the past. With positive reinforcement, the dog behaves through a desire to please and earn a reward, rather than through fear. This method recognizes that the dog's basic instinct is to try to please and that lessons are learned more quickly and effectively, when the dog is able to figure out what you want her to do. You are basically allowing the dog the time and opportunity to learn using her own brain.
What are the actual dog behavior reiforcements that make this technique work? Quite simply they are the things that motivate dogs - food, positive attention and praise.
Some ways that you can improve the training process: - Use meaningful rewards. Use treats that the dog really likes - dogs can easily get bored with a pat on the head and most dogs don't really like being patted on the head anyway. Pet them in a place and in a manner they love, like a good chest rub etc.You will be able to maintain a high quality of training when you use higher quality reinforcements. Dog trainers refer to these high quality reinforcements as "primary reinforcements," as food and affection are reinforcements that most dogs respond to consistently and reliably.
-Use timing correctly. When your dog obeys a command, you must immediately "mark" the reward earning behavior, so that the dog understands what the desired behavior is that earned the reward. One way to mark the desired behavior is to use your voice, by saying "yes" or "good girl" using a happy, energetic voice. Another effective way is to use a clicker, which you click when the desired behavior is performed, then proceed with the treat.
– You must be consistent with your marker and treat. When teaching your dog a new command you must use the same verbal cue consistently, followed by an immediate marker and reinforcement. When teaching a dog a new command, such as stopping them from jumping on you, you must decide beforehand what verbal command to use and then be absolutely consistent with it. If you tell the dog to "get down" one time and the next time you say "get off" and then a third time "don't jump" you will confuse them and they won't learn effectively what you really want. Even the smartest dogs don’t understand English – they need to learn, through consistent repetition, they need to associate one specific command and behavior. Her rate of obedience will be much better if you choose one particular phrase and use it every time you wish her to perform a desired behavior.
